“Triangle of Sadness” wins Palme d’Or at Cannes 2022

by KM, Movie Lightbox

Ruben Östlund’s biting social satire “Triangle of Sadness” has won the Palme d’Or at the 75th Cannes Film Festival. It is the second time that the Swedish director won the prestigious prize at the festival. He won five years ago for his first film in competition “The Square”.

“Triangle of Sadness” follows a couple who were invited for a luxury cruise with a rogues’ gallery of super-rich passengers, everything appears “Instagrammable” until heavy seasickness hits the passengers. “When we started to make this film, I think that we have one goal, to really try to make an exciting film for the audience. We want them to ask questions, we wanted after the screening (for people) to go out together and have something to talk about”, said Östlund during his acceptance speech.

Grand Prix has been jointly awarded to Lukas Dhont’s tender drama on childhood and friendship, “Close” and “Stars At Noon” by Claire Denis starring Margaret Qualley and Joe Alwyn. South Korea’s Park Chan-wook was named Best Director for his neo-noir film “Decision to Leave”. A special 75th Anniversary Prize was given to the Dardenne Brothers for their film “Tori and Lokita”. The awards were selected by a nine-member jury presided by French actor Vincent Lindon.

The prestigious festival now on its 75th year has attempted to bring back the pre-pandemic glamour and celebration of world cinema. With the war in Ukraine at the backdrop, the festival sparks dialogues about the value of cinema in a socio-political context. At the end of Ruben Östlund’s speech, he invited the crowd to join him and bellow a primal ‘scream of happiness’. A scream of joy inside the Palais which could also mean that cinema is very much alive and back!
