Venezia 79 Lineup Unveiled

by KM, Movie Lightbox

The lineup of films selected for the 79th Venice International Film Festival has been unveiled today by Festival Director Alberto Barbera. This year coincides with the 90th anniversary of its foundation in 1932 and marks the importance of the oldest film festival in the world, an event that made cinema history and officially recognized film as the seventh art.

A total of 73 new feature films will be in the Official Selection, with 23 films in Competition vying for the coveted Golden Lion, the festival’s top prize and 18 films in the Orizzonti, a section that represents the latest aesthetic and expressive trends. New features by Darren Aronofsky, Alejandro G. Iñarritu, Todd Field, Andrew Dominik and Luca Guadagnino will be competing in the main section. Directors who are participating for the first time in the Competition section include Alice Diop, Koji Fukuda, Romain Gavras, Joanna Hogg and Santiago Mitre. Noah Baumbach’s White Noise starring Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig is set to open the festival. This is Baumbach’s return to the Lido after he premiered Marriage Story in 2019.

The international jury for the Venezia 79 Competition will be presided by Actress Julianne Moore. Last year’s Golden Lion winner Audrey Diwan will also be part of the jury that will award the official prizes to the feature films in Competition. The Orrizonti section will be headed by director and screenwriter Isabel Coixet. The Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement will be awarded to American writer and screenwriter Paul Schrader (The Card Counter, First Reformed, American Gigolo) and iconic French actress Catherine Deneuve.

“The short-sighted debate over so-called “windows” and the predominance of algorithms have little real effect, while the majority of movies that aspire toward distribution in cinemas are suspended in a limbo that is destined to last forever. But more and more people go to festivals, and the desire to earn a place in the sun in the ever-feared and much-respected agon seems to indicate a future that is anything but free of expectations and wide appeal.”, said Alberto Barbera, Festival Director.

Here’s the full lineup for the 79th Venice International Film Festival:
